Now that LogMeIn is no longer free, anyone have any suggestions to a good alternative, that's free?

teamviewer ?

Don't you need someone on the other end to read the code out to you?

Don't you need someone on the other end to read the code out to you?

There is a feature called unattended access where you don't need someone at the controlled computer.

I installed Teamviewer remotely via Logmein this morning to my home machines and my families machines that were on. No probs and easy to do :)

teamviewer ?

Set it up and tried it today – brilliant. Can be setup and used in attended or unattended mode. Fast and lag free – and free for personal use. Theres a couple of good Youtube videos on it as well.

I can see either Logmein going back to offering their free access again, or dying completely, 88 pages already on the logmein forums of 'Bye, cya, 'WTF Teamviewer here I come'.

Just moved all my systems to Team viewer. Bye bye Logmein.

I can see either Logmein going back to offering their free access again, or dying completely,

More likely some form of free access to keep a web awareness about them. All those leaving wont effect them as they weren't making anything from them anyway. It's a good product, just way way too expensive for pro access.

I installed Teamviewer remotely via Logmein

haha i love the irony

As an Ignition buyer, this is extra bitey in suckfestness.

+1 teamviewer

I like it too.

Put a shortcut to the teamviewer exe on Mum's desktop so all she has to do is double-click and I can remote in (c. 400k away)

yep – feeling ripped of too. The TeamViewer remote control app is free :-)

Did you do it on the LA to Sydney flight?

how many computers can you support on the free account?

I have been using logmeinfree since about 2003 or 2004 and I have not yet received an email or in app message that my account is going to expire!

Apparently you either get an email or a notification the first time you login after 21st Jan but I have had neither checked spam etc and believe me I have used logmein many times in the past few days.. I did not know about the account no longer being free until I saw a news story about it otherwise I would have been none the wiser..

Have installed team viewer in anticipation of closure but to date apparently as a free customer I have not been notified of the service no longer being free

I have paid for the Android app don't know if that's a reason I haven't been given an email yet or if it's because had free for so long.. anyone else not get notified?

I have paid for the Android app don't know if that's a reason I haven't been given an email yet or if it's because had free for so long.. anyone else not get notified?

I paid for the iOS app too, and I got an email saying 'LogMeIn will no longer be free'.

Thanks, LogMeIn. Way to punish paying customers and making the app that I payed WAY too much for in the first place completely redundant.

Work from home with logmein free

I hope this decision completely cripples their business.

I have been using logmeinfree since about 2003 or 2004
Same here. Didn't get an email but did log in today for first time in a few weeks and got a message telling me... no longer free...
Because you’re a loyal user, we’re giving you a complimentary six-month LogMeIn Pro subscription

Will use that up to the end I guess. Teamviewer was always second best in a straight contest between the two for me, but still gets the job done.

Because you’re a loyal user, we’re giving you a complimentary six-month LogMeIn Pro subscription

WTF?
I've been using LogMeIn free for just as long as you, and I got no such offer for a 6 month subscription! All I got was an 'introductory price' for the first year.

Mind you, this is after I paid full price for their (overpriced) mobile app!

Strange. I may have had it longer, can't really recall. I have never paid for a version of it on any OS, always used the free trials, then reverted back to Logmein Free.

Hit them up with an email if you really want those 6 months extra.

It is just too expensive for anything but corporate use imo.

I just switched to Teamviewer, so much better than Logmein Free anyway :)

I'm thinking the same thing now, at least on the 3 PC's I've connected up so far. Nicer interface and absolutely zero lag. Too good to be true just about – wonder when the free version of this goes south ;)

Put a shortcut to the teamviewer exe on Mum's desktop so all she has to do is double-click and I can remote in (c. 400k away)

I have set it up on my sister's computer and because she is 'thick' when it comes to pc's I have set it up to autostart with windows. This way she has to do nothing at all.

Thanks for this thread, I will be installing Teamviewer now as well. :)

Hmm can't seem to get my Samsung Galaxy 3 to connect for files... Was at home and all devices on same network (wireless) and could connect for remote control.. What I wanted to do was be able to grab dome music files at will onto my phone ( or iPad – but thats a whole different story .... Apple Bah !)

When trying to connect (with Samsung) – it just sits there trying to connect :( Does it have anything to do with the fact the filesystems I'm trying to access are 3 x 2 TB drives – and just have to be patient ? Waited 10 mins and no connection :(

LogMeIn are going to lose big time... They have forced their customers to try their competitor

LogMeIn are going to lose big time...

They're not really losing anything. They weren't making any money from those that have ditched them for TeamViewer any way.

They weren't making any money from those that have ditched them for TeamViewer any way.

Actually they are. I paid $30 for their iOS app, even though I had LogMeIn free.

That's a decent chunk they will no longer get from people with free accounts that wish to get the app.

I paid $30 for their iOS app

Really? I had a free version of LogMeIn on my phone.

Really? I had a free version of LogMeIn on my phone.

I guess it's possible they could've changed it – or maybe you bought it while they were temporarily giving it for free.

Just received an email from Logmein telling me that because I have their paid app on my phone I can continue to remote access my PC's even after my 6 month complimentary subscription to Logmein Pro expires.

First I've been told by Logmein that I had a 6 month complimentary subscription to Logmein Pro – only email I remember was the 'too bad, so sad' we're no longer free for private use one.

Doesn't matter, uninstalled their software and deleted the app from the phone when I saw how good Teamviewer was.

Yep good one LogMein – get people to go to the competitors.

I am trying Google Remote desktop. Have just set it up – seems OK. On the other hand I have not tried teamviewer.

Can I delete the Logmein account myself – I could not see how to do that in the portal. I sent an email to support and got a curt reply :-

Teamviewer is miles better then logmein.

I used tv most of the time, but there are times when something is wrong with the remote machine, and despite tv is active and online, it doesn't recognised my connection request. And I have to use logmein to login to the remote machine to restart teamviewer.

I am trying Google Remote desktop. Have just set it up – seems OK. On the other hand I have not tried teamviewer.

Got to try that out.

I sent LMI an email from my account I login with and it seems the ticket has been closed – so I do not know if the account has or has not been deleted.

Anyway I am over it now and my un-deleted account can clog up their system for all I now care; I tried.

I've also been trying out Google Remote Desktop. It works as well as Logmein on both Windows and OSX. If anything, I think that it may even render & resize the screen better than LMI but it doesn't offer support for remote printing or audio. It's installed as a Chrome app but it isn't necessary to have chrome running on the remote machine to establish a remote control session. it's only shortcoming is that Google currently don't have an IOS or Android version of the client app but are supposedly working on it.

IMO, this is possibly why Logmein have suddenly discontinued the free version. If their 'Pro' product is soon to be competing against Google, then it's days are numbered. Better that they make whatever profit they can now by pushing people onto an expensive Pro version before Google take too large a bite out of the market base. Sure they will lose most of their LMI Free users, but they will at least gain a percentage of these as Pro users.

It will remain free if you paid for the ignition app.

Wrong.

I paid for it and no longer have access to my PCs

I got an email from them saying it will remain free to access from the ignition app.

I don't know what else to tell you other than I paid for it and received no such email.

I got an email from them saying it will remain free to access from the ignition app.

I did too – but I'd already deleted the software from the PC's and the phone before I could see if they were tricking me or not.

Besides paying 700$ to purchase teamviewer does anyone know how to stop the popup that you see after closing a connection?

This is what has always bothered me. If you are watching a movie and use teamviewer a popup is on the screen...

Very short sessions don't invite the pop-up. So you when log off, you can then re-connect, kill the nag, and log off without it reappearing.

Today I tried ThinRDP from http://www.cybelesoft.com/thinrdp/

It's easy to install, however unlike Logmein, ThinRDP requires firewall config & router port fowarding.

Logmein free Archives softwareLogmein free for windows

To access the remote machine, just use a HTML5-based web browser.

Overall, I'm impressed with ThinRDP and the lag isn't too bad over an internet connection.

The installer download is less than 20MB and no restart is necessary after installation.

I installed Teamviewer remotely via Logmein

+1, haven't looked back, very easy to use and snappy UI for my requirements.

unattended access teamviewer

I am positive yesterday it was set to unattended

Install Logmein On This Computer

Oh and i am trying to connect via the web interface

Another vote for TeamViewer here. redraw rate is excellent even under heavy bandwidth loads.

Use TeamViewer pretty heavily. Have 8 PC's in various locations + Phone & Tablet all on it and use it regularly. Have LMI for work related PC's, personally prefer TV.

Today/tomorrow it looks like there is hundreds of apps free in the amazon apps app, including Jump Desktop usually 11.95. Aswell as tunein radio pro.

I used to use the free vers, you just need a google account and to allow access for the software in google settings, no more teamviewer popup.
There is also splashtop but i have never used that, may try it oneday...

Teamviewer is annoying the crap outta me at the moment, keeps popping up with screen cannot be captured at the moment error and all the tips I've found so far (install as service etc) have been done already.

Anyone got any ideas?

Today I received an email from Logmein, stating that for Ignition users, we can still continue to use the App to remotely access our computers, even after the 6 months free trial of Pro. Interestingly I do not find the same information at their website. I do however, find their community forum where thousands of users have expressed their respond to the demise of Logmein Free.

I’ll probably just hang around and see what happens in 6 months. I’ve already got a few other alternatives to use, such as Splashtop, Teamviewer & VNC. And while going through the forums, I discovered Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop, which I’ll find time to try out.
