Speedify is not your average run-of-the-mill VPN service. Well, to be fair, it’s more of a channel bonding tool than a full-fledged VPN service. While writing this Speedify review, I found it rather impressive to boost my speeds significantly by merging my Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and mobile internet connection.

I also like that it offers well-designed modern-looking apps with built-in options for encryption, Kill Switch, and an even mode dedicated for streaming. However, when it actually comes to offering VPN-specific performance, Speedify lacks quite a bit.

After all, Speedify was initially advertised as an internet speed-boosting tool. So, it’s not as good in performance as ExpressVPN or Surfshark. For instance, Netflix didn’t work for me. Despite changing multiple US servers, I still got the proxy error. Torrenting also didn’t go smoothly. While starting at pretty fast speeds, Speedify abruptly became unbearably slow.

Overall, Speedify is a decent VPN service with 50+ servers in 35 countries that’s good for basic usage; however, you should be better off with something else for heavy usage. So after weighing in all the pros and cons, I’ve given Speedify a 4.0 stars rating overall.

If you wish to check out other VPNs that are free, please check out our list of best free VPN services.

My Rating Criteria

To thoroughly test Speedify for its pros and cons, I used my 9 step rating criteria:

  1. Jurisdiction – Is Speedify safe to use?
  2. Security – Does Speedify keep logs?
  3. Leaks – Does Speedify leak IP, DNS, WebRTC?
  4. Servers – Is Speedify good for torrenting?
  5. Speed – How fast is Speedify?
  6. Streaming – Does Speedify unblock US Netflix?
  7. Compatibility – Which devices can I use Speedify with?
  8. Pricing – What does Speedify cost?
  9. Trustworthiness – Is Speedify a good VPN?

Jurisdiction – Is Speedify safe to use?

Well, if you’re worried about data sharing and surveillance, Speedify can be considered not safe to use. I say this because Speedify is a US-based VPN provider based in Philadelphia, which, as we all know, falls under the surveillance jurisdiction of the 5 eyes.

Since Speedify operates from the US, they have to abide by strict data retention laws. This is not ideal for a VPN company since logs are something no customer would want to compromise on. Even though Speedify claims to log no user data, the fact that they operate just under the nose of the 5 eyes makes me quite skeptical.

Security – Does Speedify keep logs?

After going through their privacy policy, I can say that Speedify is actually no logs service. I like that they don’t hide any information. They literally have everything in plain sight. They clearly mention on their website that:

We do not log the IP addresses of websites that you visit or the contents of data sent or received through the Service.

That being said, Speedify does collect some information, but nothing worth worrying about. Under their “What Personal Information We Collect” heading, they clearly mention all the information they gather about their users.

  • Contact information
  • Homepage access logs
  • Device information
  • Location information
  • Cookies
  • Speedify server access logs

Encryption & Other Features

Encryption wise I found Speedify to be quite impressive as well. Instead of using AES-256-bit encryption, Speedify uses what they call ChaCha 256-bit Encryption. This encryption mechanism is supposedly way harder to crack than the usual AES-256 Bit encryption found in almost every other VPN service.

ChaCha 256-bit Encryption is also what makes this VPN stand out amongst other VPN providers in its class. The way it works is quite complicated, so that I won’t get too much into details. Rest assured, you don’t have to worry about anybody decrypting your private data.

Speedify Channel Bonding

Conversely, to boost up speeds and reduce latency, Speedify developed its own protocol by the name of “Channel bonding.” Like the name suggests, this technology works by combining all network connections such as Wi-Fi, cellular, Ethernet, etc., simultaneously to offer a seamless and refined network connection.

Another thing that I really found helpful about Channel bonding is staying connected even when one of the connection sources becomes unavailable. This feature is convenient, and it saved my download progress at least twice during my testing.

Speedify Kill Switch

Kill Switch is another super handy feature that comes standard with Speedify. The Kill Switch feature basically disconnects your internet connection until your VPN connection restores. This prevents your information from leaking accidentally if your VPN connection fails. You can toggle on or off the Kill Switch from within the app.

Streaming Bypass

This feature is basically a mode to access streaming services. At the moment, it has options to unblock Netflix, Disney+, HBO, and Hulu. While this feature sounds too good to be true, I couldn’t watch US Netflix shows. But we’ll talk more about streaming performance a bit later on in this review.

Leaks – Does Speedify leak IP, DNS, WebRTC?

As for VPN leaks, Speedify is actually leakproof. I ran it through extensive testing and found it to be leakproof. Speedify managed not to expose my IP, DNS, and WebRTC data. Here are the screenshots of the test results:

IP Leak Test:

First, I performed the IP leak test. To do that, I used a US server location. As you can see from the screenshot below, my original IP address is not being exposed. Pretty good so far.

DNS Leak Test:

Next, I checked for DNS leaks. Speedify comes with a built-in option to select from a list of available DNS servers; Speedify managed to show no DNS leak sign. Check out the screenshot below.

WebRTC Leak Test:

After both DNS and IP leak tests, I also checked for WebRTC leaks, and Speedify passed this test too without any issues. As you can see from the screenshot below, my IP is not being detected.

Virus Test:

Last but not least, I also checked for any hidden virus or malware in the Speedify app. I ran its Google Play Store app link through VirusTotal.com and found no virus at all. Just check out the screenshot below:

Servers – Is Speedify good for torrenting?

Well, to be honest, Speedify is not good for torrenting. Even though Speedify servers are around 50+ servers in number and available in 35 countries, it didn’t manage to offer a worthwhile performance. I tried downloading a moderate size torrent file, and my speeds suddenly dropped quite significantly. Overall, you might want to use some other VPN if you torrent quite frequently.

Does Speedify work in China?

Since the Speedify account only offers 50+ servers and no actual server in China, Speedify doesn’t currently work in China. Even its Hong Kong server location didn’t manage to unblock Chinese websites like Bilibili. This is kind of disappointing considering that Surfshark, which is a lot cheaper, does work quite well in China.

Speed – How fast is Speedify?

On the speed front, Speedify performed quite well. I managed to get pretty decent speeds on most servers, which is quite impressive. I performed all my speed tests using my 30 Mbps internet connection.

Canadian Server:

While connected to its Canadian server, I managed to get around 27.10 Mbps downloading speed. This is really good, considering my base connection speed was 30 Mbps.

US Server:

With the US, I managed to get slightly slower speeds. However, nothing too bad. On average, the US servers managed to output 20.88 Mbps download speeds.

UK Server:

With the UK server, I managed to get pretty decent speeds. At max, on my 30 Mbps connection, the UK server managed to push out around 24.55 Mbps download speed.

Overall, Speedify’s Channel bonding technology certainly works, and I managed to get really impressive speeds with it. If you ache for fast speeds, Speedify is a good choice.

Streaming – Does Speedify unblock US Netflix?

Even though Speedify is really fast, unfortunately, it didn’t unblock Netflix for me. Despite enabling the streaming mode for Netflix, I still came across the proxy error multiple times.

This is seriously disappointing considering that Speedify actually advertises a mode dedicated to accessing Netflix. Therefore, for Netflix, you will have to consider using some other VPN. Overall, Speedify Netflix is not happening at the moment.

Other Streaming Services that work with Speedify

Aside from Netflix, that, unfortunately, didn’t work, Speedify also didn’t work with Hulu. I tried streaming “Rick and Morty” with the US server, and nothing worked.

That being said, BBC iPlayer surprisingly worked out of nowhere. I used a random UK server to stream the “Peaky Blinders,” and it worked.

As for speeds and video playback quality, everything streamed just okay. I wouldn’t say I was blown away in any way since I did encounter a few buffering issues. Speedify is also one of the best free VPN for Popcorn Time.

Compatibility – Which devices can I use Speedify with?

Currently, the service is compatible with all the leading platforms like Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. But on the negative side, Speedify doesn’t currently support gaming consoles or even smart TVs, for that matter. This is not good considering that other VPNs at least offer router compatibility. It does, however, work on Firestick TVs, and you can read free VPN for Firestick reddit reviews for user experience.

Speedify Windows App

As for the user interface of the Windows app of Speedify, it really caught my eye. Everything is neatly laid and vividly mentioned within the application. The color scheme is also something I really like. The hues of pinks and blues really give Speedify a unique look. I also like how easy it is to switch between Speedify server locations.

The interface of Speedify is split into two sections. The top part contains the Speedify toggle button and both the cellular and Wi-Fi signal strengths, and the bottom part graphically shows the speeds. The bottom part is also where you’ll be able to see the stats of your monthly and daily data consumption.

Speedify Mac App

As for macOS, Speedify also offers a pretty nice-looking app for it too. Similar to Windows, the macOS app also has a split-screen interface. It also boasts a clean UI with the same hues of pinks and blues. I like how the macOS client is. You’re literally not going to notice any sort of lags.

Speedify Android App

For Android, Speedify offers a smooth, user-friendly, and easy-to-use application. It has a 4.0-star rating on Google Play Store and is super easy to use. I also love that the Android app offers nearly identical features that you can find in the Windows or the Mac app of Speedify.

Speedify iOS App

As for the iOS app of Speedify, it is also super easy to use and well designed. The iOS app has even better user reviews. Currently, it has a 4.7-star rating on the iTunes store, which is super impressive. As for usability, it works similarly to the Android app and has pretty much every feature you could need.

Pricing – What does Speedify cost?

There are currently three (3) Speedify’s subscription plans you can choose from. Individual, Family, and Team Plan. The Individual plan covers one user, the Family plan covers 5 users, and the Team plan covers as many users as you like.

Personally, the only affordable plan, in my opinion, is the individual plan which can be used on 5 devices simultaneously. The rest of the two plans are costly for a consumer VPN, if you ask me.

The one thing that you’re not going to find in Individual and Family plans is dedicated IPs. This is only available in the Team package. However, Speedify dedicated server starts from $75.00/month. If you want something a lot more affordable, do check out our handpicked list of VPN deals.

Individuals Package:

The individuals’ package has four major plans:

Families Package:

Similarly, the family package also has four plans:

Team Plan:

Last but not least, the team package offers 2 plans which start from:

As for payment methods, you can only use Credit Cards, PayPal, and Amazon Pay. To my surprise, they have not added any sort of anonymous payment option like Bitcoin. Their refund policy, on the other hand, is pretty great. All of their plans are covered by a full risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee. If you don’t end up liking their service, you can always get a refund.

Trustworthiness – Is Speedify a good VPN?

Well, if you check out its Trustpilot rating, Speedify is not particularly a good VPN. In fact, Speedify doesn’t have a lot of presence on Trustpilot. I mean, it only has 6 user reviews in total. What’s even worse is that almost 67% of users have rated the service as Bad. Only 17% of users have given it an Excellent rating. As for the overall score, Speedify only has a 3.0/5.0 Trustpilot score.

Speedify Reddit Reviews

Aside from a not-so-good Trustpilot rating and score, Speedify also doesn’t have many positive comments on Reddit. I came across a lot of negative comments. For instance, Here’s one Reddit comment claiming that Speedify made no difference in speeds:

Here’s another negative comment about Speedify and how it will not make any difference in speed unless you already have a high-speed connection. But fortunately for me, I didn’t encounter slow speeds aside from when I tried downloading torrents.

Customer Support

Although there’s no live chat support on their website, their email ticketing system is, to the very least helpful. Besides offering email support, they also have a bunch of helpful query-related articles on their website.

They are also quite detailed, so you should be able to resolve your issue right there and then. However, if, for some reason, the related articles don’t offer any help, you can also shoot them an email. In a nutshell, they offer the following support options:

  • Blog
  • Contact Us
  • Email
  • Press
  • Social Media

Alternatives to Speedify

If you’re not interested in Speedify, don’t worry; read a list of other VPN reviews:

Do I Recommend Speedify?

Well, to be honest, I do recommend using Speedify. It might not be like most other VPN services, but that’s exactly what makes it so different and unique. I like that it is fast; I also love their modern-looking apps well, especially their built-in speed test feature. Overall, if you just want a simple VPN that can deliver fast speeds, Speedify is the perfect VPN to get.

Speedify is perfect to use in many countries although it might not offer servers everywhere. It may not be the best free VPN for a Philippines server, but you can always use it within the Philippines to connect to any server you like.

That said, there are still a few things these VPNs need to improve upon. While their overall service was good, it was kind of disappointing to see the lack of Netflix support. Aside from that, while Speedify managed to offer quite fast speeds, it became slightly burdened while downloading torrents.

I also found it weird that they offer iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac applications, yet they don’t offer any support for both gaming consoles and Smart TVs. All in all, If it can improve upon a few features, Speedify can definitely earn a 5-star rating in the future. But for now, after concluding this Speedify review, I found it to be slightly short on performance and have given it a 4.0/5.0 star rating overall.

To check out more VPNs other than Speedify, check out our other unbiased VPN reviews 2021.

Speedify is a relatively young VPN that, according to its CEO Alex Gizis, puts more emphasis on speed than security. It relies on its channel bonding feature to combine the power of multiple connections – like your home WiFi and 4G cell data allowance – to boost your internet speed.

Except this bonding feature isn’t really all that useful – or fast. Speedify’s service has been a hot topic lately, with users complaining that it doesn’t make their connections any faster. Complaints are particularly common about the free version of the service.

In fact, when we tested Speedify for ourselves, the results showed a pretty significant drop in download and upload speeds. The free version is the worst for speed, but the problem persists across all paid subscription plans.

Our connection speeds without Speedify:

Our connection speeds with Speedify:

As soon as I connected to Speedify my speeds dropped significantly

All in all, Speedify’s free VPN doesn’t deliver on its promise to increase your connection speed, and upgrading to a paid Speedify plan won’t solve the problem. If you’re willing to pay for a VPN, you’ll be far happier with a premium provider like ExpressVPN.

Worse, unimpressive speed is only one of the problems you’re likely to encounter with Speedify. Below, we’ll look at Speedify’s other drawbacks in detail and give a list of completely free services that offer faster connections with no security compromises.

First, however, here’s a great trick to use a topnotch paid VPN service free for a short time.

How to Get a Premium VPN FREE

If you’re after a VPN for short-term use, such as protecting yourself while traveling overseas, consider using a free trial of a premium VPN service instead of putting up with the flaws of a completely free service.

In addition to free trials that range from a day to a week, our highest-rated VPNs have money-back guarantees, so you can use the service for a month or more completely free!

These are our top picks for premium services that offer refunds with no questions asked:
  1. Cyberghost — With access to over 7,450 virtual locations across the globe and a 45-day money-back guarantee, CyberGhost is the perfect choice for short-term VPN use. And if you’re looking for a more long-term solution, its one-year and longer packages are budget friendly.
  2. ExpressVPN — If it’s speed you‘re after, ExpressVPN outperforms Speedify by giant leaps. You‘ll be able to bypass geoblocking and censorship knowing your connection is as secure as possible. ExpressVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try this quality service risk-free.

Additional Problems with Speedify

Speedify is a flawed and disappointing VPN in many ways, especially the free Starter Plan. The provider has been accused of serious DNS leaks, suggesting that you should take the CEO at his word when he says that security is not the company’s top priority.

One of the most significant – and expensive – issues with Speedify is increased data usage. By combining two connections to load a page, you’re loading the page twice, using twice as much data. It makes no sense to use a free VPN if the result is costly data overages.

Speedify isn’t forthcoming about this issue on its website, but when we contacted user support directly, a representative confirmed our fears: your data usage could skyrocket with Speedify. They did offer us a solution – setting data caps on our account. In other words, they told us to just use less data.

And if you’re looking to unlock heavily geoblocked content with Speedify, you’re sadly out of luck. The Speedify website confirms that it cannot unblock Netflix.

If your browsing is light, you could perhaps live with a sluggish VPN with limited functionality. Unfortunately, there is an even more important cause for concern with this service: Like many free VPNs, Speedify can’t be trusted to protect your privacy.

Speedify’s Data Logging Practices

When you use Speedify, the provider logs some of your data. Although quite a few VPNs record basic information like connection times and bandwidth usage, the most trustworthy services prevent their logs from ever being linked to you or your devices.

According to its Privacy Policy, Speedify records not only your access information, but also your IP address and unique identifiers from your device’s hardware. Speedify claims that it doesn’t share any of your personal data with third parties – except, of course, the third parties it’s partnered with.

Your usage and cookie data, for example, is shared with Google Analytics for the purpose of delivering personalized ads and preparing reports that are shared with other Google services.

If you report an error while using Speedify, the app sends a message to Raygun, a third-party error tracking service. This message will include your IP address and email address. This setting is activated by default, but you can opt out in your account settings.

Speedify’s Vulnerability to Five-Eyes Scrutiny

Speedify is based in the US, directly under the jurisdiction of the Five-Eyes Alliance. For VPNs in 5/9/14-Eyes territories, strict no-logs policies are particularly important.

Because Speedify logs and shares some of your personal information with third parties, your security could easily be compromised.

A good free VPN can deliver high speeds and bypass geoblocks without putting your data and devices at risk. Read on for our top recommendations for completely free, fast, and safe alternatives to Speedify.

All Free VPNs Have Flaws – Choose Safety First

Most free VPNs lack the security of their premium competitors, leaving your connection exposed to cybercriminals.

In early 2018, free VPN provider Hola suffered a disastrous attack when a hacker breached its developer account and redirected users of a cryptocurrency website to a phishing page.

Free services also tend to fall short when it comes to bypassing geoblocks and censorship. One of the reasons that most free VPNs can’t unblock Netflix US, for example, is that they don’t continually refresh their servers’ IP addresses. So Netflix learns to recognize the static IPs and block them.

Worst of all, many free VPNs gather your data and sell it. That’s why for the ultimate protection and reliability, we recommend using a free VPN offered by a premium VPN provider. That way, your online security never becomes compromised.

VPN companies offer free versions to give you a taste of their premium services and encourage you to upgrade to paid plans. That of course means the free plans have limitations (usually on server access and data usage), but they will always be more reliable than standalone free services.

Best Totally FREE Alternatives to Speedify

1. TunnelBear VPN

TunnelBear’s Little Bear plan offers you 500MB of free data each month. Although this won‘t be enough for a Netflix marathon, it’ll keep you covered when you‘re using public wi-fi or banking online.

And if you‘re worried about censorship, the GhostBear mode will alter the VPN signature on your data to evade deep packet inspection (DPI). If you need more data, TunnelBear offers very affordable premium plans (aptly titled Giant and Grizzly Bear).

With your free VPN from TunnelBear, you’ll enjoy a secure, fast connection and a choice of virtual locations in over 40 countries. And unlike Speedify, TunnelBear can unlock geoblocked content like Netflix.

When its Always On mode is enabled, TunnelBear starts up the instant you connect to the web. Its Vigilant Mode will kick in if your connection is interrupted, blocking all unsecured traffic until the connection is restored. All in all, it’s no wonder that TunnelBear is one of our best-rated VPNs.

2. Hotspot Shield

HotSpot Shield’s free VPN is one of the more limited options available with regard to server choices, but it doesn‘t compromise on network quality or security.

You’ll be able to choose from several virtual locations within the US and enjoy 500MB of free bandwidth per day. Although there is a slight difference in connection speed when compared to Hotspot Shield’s paid Elite option, it shouldn‘t affect your regular browsing and streaming.

Your data will be in good hands with HotSpot Shield’s top-of-the-line SSL encryption standards and an automatic kill switch. HotSpot Shield also offers a free 7-day trial of its unlimited premium service.

You can check out what customers have to say about HotSpot Shield in our reviews archive.

3. ZenMate

If you’re looking for a feature-packed free VPN, ZenMate is your perfect match! The free version offers a huge range of features with little compromise.

With ZenMate, you’ll enjoy security features like WebRTC blocking, high-end encryption, and a NAT Firewall that prevents cybercriminals from scanning your device.

Its Always On feature will start your VPN as soon as you go online, ensuring that your data is never exposed. The premium version of ZenMate is very budget friendly, and offers unlimited speeds and the ability to connect up to Unlimited devices at the same time.

When you activate your free account, ZenMate will give you a 7-day free trial of its premium service. Find out why users are raving about ZenMate VPN!

4. Windscribe VPN

Windscribe‘s impressive free VPN service allows you take full control on your online security. As a basic account user, you can use up to 10GB of data each month to stream, browse, and unlock geoblocked content. You’ll also have full access to a long list of VPN tools, like an ad blocker.

Windscribe keeps a strict no-logs policy and uses an AES-256 cipher with a 4096-bit RSA key to keep your data safe, and its simple apps make getting started a breeze.

The paid pro accounts are even more exciting. Unlike with the free version, you’ll enjoy unlimited data and access to servers in over 60 countries. Dedicated Windflix servers allow you to unblock Netflix US and UK no matter where you are in the world.

Best of all, Windscribe’s referral program rewards you for inviting your friends, with 1GB of extra free data per month per referral. And, if your friend signs up for a pro account, you’ll get one free!

5. ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN is a high-powered, high-speed VPN with a multitude of account options. The free plan offers a stable but low-speed option with access to three virtual locations.

Or you can upgrade to the low-cost Basic, Plus, or Visionary plan to enjoy unlimited features, including Tor servers, secure streaming, and P2P connections.

ProtonVPN is well-liked by users because, unlike Speedify, it benefits from strong laws in its home country of Switzerland that protect your anonymity. This means that it can’t be coerced into spying on you or divulging your information to government surveillance agencies.
